falmouth degree show identity design
the brief:
to create a speculative visual language for Falmouth School of Art’s 2022 undergraduate summer degree show.

the research:
Conducting some initial visual research allowed me to uncover the strengths and weaknesses of popular degree shows in the UK.

Surveying students attending Falmouth University gave me an insight into the student experience. Understanding what makes the university distinct in the eyes of the students gives me a solid foundation to build upon creatively.
-participant on what excites them about being an artist
“as an artist, i am excited by the freedom and the creative approach to living. letting myself be different.”
the design:
My aim with the degree show’s design was to maintain the already established identity of Falmouth University while promoting it as an institution that celebrates the individuality of its students.
yellow
regarded as cheerful, optimistic and creative
fuchsia
communicates new ideas and nonconformity
turquoise
often associated with the sea; suggests initiative and self-awareness
This triadic colour palette in combination expresses experimentalism due to the vibrancy of colours. The combination of colours appears innovative and non-conforming, embodying Falmouth’s sense of freedom of ideas and passion.

the result:
Contextualising designs with mockups and extrapolating design elements across different mediums to meet all deliverables outlined in the brief.

-student response to the degree show identity
“the degree show identity is exciting and playful; i think it reflects well the enthusiasm of a uni student.”
This project has really brought fourth my passion for identity design. Using tools such as typography, colour psychology and consistency to create a visual language representative of celebration, innovation and excitement has been an undeniably rewarding endeavour, and Falmouth University students find this design equally as successful.
Audience feedback throughout the whole creative process was a priority for me, resulting in a design that is equally the students’ as it is my own. Though sometimes I had to make decisions that went against the majority of survey responses. These were difficult decisions to make initially, but as the process continued I became more confident within my decisions as the designer.
Due to the limited amount of time provided by the module, I was unable to create more than just the landing page of the website. Next time, I would love to make interactive prototypes of mediums such as the webpage.
All in all, this project ignited a real passion for design within me. Identity design is something I definitely hope to do more of in the future.
